Baseball’s Steroid Era is Over…Hopefully

Will someone please correct if I’m wrong, but I am sick and tired of hearing about steroids in baseball. The season is upon us and all I want to do is sit back and enjoy the beauty of the game. There’s just one problem with that wish, the media. I know the over-covered A-Rod steroid story is going to be jammed down all our throats all season long. A message to ESPN and all other sports related media networks, I don’t care if Alex Rodriguez’s cousin picked him up after practice.

With that said, is the steroid era over in baseball? In my semi-expert opinion it will never be over. There will always be people who lie, cheat, and steal to get ahead in life and with the amount of money out there to be made in Major League Baseball there will be cheaters. Don’t get me wrong though, I strongly believe that the use of performance enhancing drugs has declined drastically in MLB over the past 5-6 years or so, but the league doesn’t even have a way to test for HGH (Human Growth Hormone). As long as the league keeps fighting to keep this stuff out of baseball then the usage will be minimized and we can all be happy.

My final thought on steroids in baseball is…does anyone care anymore? The feeling I get is that the general public and average fan just wants to enjoy the game and root for their teams not worry about the purity of the game. Of course we don’t want our favorite players using steroids, but I have far more important things in my life to think about than if the Indian’s backup left fielder is on the juice. It seems the only people who do care are the 80 year old baseball purists and the insane MLB Hall-of-Fame voters who didn’t put Ricky Henderson on their ballot.

So let’s all sit back, grab a cold beverage, tear open a bag of peanuts, and enjoy this beautiful game with the thoughts of steroids behind us.
